Who can see your private messages on Facebook? A guide to privacy settings and encryption

You can use secret conversations to initiate a confidential discussion with your friends. The messages in private chats are end-to-end encrypted. Therefore, only the sender and the receiver will be able to see the messages. Additionally, the secret messages delete themselves after a certain time. The user stipulates this time.

It means that the normal chats we do on a day-to-day basis are under the watch of Facebook. Therefore, Facebook launched this secret conversation feature a few years ago. It was to shun privacy concerns. A secret conversation is a feature you can initiate from within your Messenger. The messages sent and received in this conversation are end-to-end encrypted. Therefore, only the sender and receiver can read the messages.

Apart from this feature, some hidden messages on your Facebook that you cannot see in your inbox. These are the messages that you get from those people who are not in your contacts. Therefore, these messages are under the button Message Requests. Moreover, some of the non-contact messages go to the spam folder. These messages are different from Facebook Messenger's secret conversation feature.

The secret conversation is a feature you can use exclusively. You can initiate a secret chat with any of your contacts. On the other hand, hidden Facebook messages are from individuals not on your contact list. These hidden messages are routed to the Message Requests and Spam message folder.

The best option is to use AirDroid Parental Control & Text Messages Monitoring App. If you have installed its paired app AirDroid Kids on your kids' Android phone and bind it to your mobile, it will let you access your kid's private conservation of Messenger. But it acts as a clone of their mobile devices' notifications. When they receive a notification that someone has sent a Secret Conversation to your kids, you will also get the notification. Then you can check them by mirroring your kids live screen to yours.

To view the hidden messages on Facebook messenger on your Android device, click on "You May Know" to see different message requests or "Spam" to see the messages labeled as spam. You can choose to open a conversation or delete the messages according to your preference.

You can't recover deleted messages on Instagram, but you can recover deleted posts, reels, and more. Tap your profile picture and choose Menu (three lines) > Settings > Account > Manage Recently Deleted. Choose what you want to recover.

In an infographic attached to the tweet, WhatsApp clarifies that it "cannot see your private messages or hear your calls and neither can Facebook." Furthermore, WhatsApp says it "does not keep logs of who everyone is messaging or calling," it "cannot see your shared location and neither can Facebook," and it "does not share your contacts with Facebook."

Does Facebook actively spy on you? It it reading private messages and texts? Does the app track your phone calls and location? CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been grilled by lawmakers on many of these questions. But you may have more.

Your private messages talk about strategies and tactics for your lawsuit. It concerns detailed information about how your accident happened and the extent of your injuries. You feel confident communicating with your attorney this way because it's so convenient and easy.

Keep in mind that this is a civil lawsuit where you are seeking monetary compensation. You still have an expectation of privacy when communicating with your lawyer, even if these communications occurred on a social network in the form of private messages.

If the judge gives the defense access to your social media account, there will likely be a logistical nightmare in giving access to the defense to view your Facebook account yet somehow limit them from gaining access to see private messages with your attorney. The court will have to craft some type of exception that will allow the defense to see your public posts and those posts that you had previously deleted and not allow them to see your private communications with your attorney.

One other thing to note is that if someone sends your child something that upsets them, the messages will disappear. Facebook says it can decrypt communications (up to 30 of the most recent messages in a Secret Conversation) to check the content if you contact its Help Team to report them.

These messages are also private between the members of the group. However, group admins can start a conversation with group members, and people inside can also be mentioned or tagged in the messages.

LinkedIn messages are entirely private between the recipient and the sender. But like other social networking sites, LinkedIn is only as safe as you make it. In addition to being private, you can also turn on two-step verification for extra security.

Dear Facebookers - Your private inbox messages are now visible for all to see, from 2009 and later. This could get VERY awkward, very quickly... this is a new change from Facebook as of yesterday. Don't believe me? Read your timeline from those years... yikes! They look like wall posts..... they are not!

Origins: The September 2012 warning reproduced above, about a recent change to Facebook supposedly making users' private inbox messages visible to everyone, proved to be a false alarm. According to a 25 September 2012 article from Mashable (via CNN):

Rumors of a Facebook bug has users from all over the world worried about private messages showing up very publicly on Timeline pages. But the social network is debunking those claims, saying these messages are actually just older wall posts.

Some members in the U.S. have said their private messages from 2007 and 2008 are showing up on their Timeline, but Facebook said that the company hasn't found a bug and believes the discrepancy comes from a wider roll out of the newer Timeline layout on a global scale.

Facebook says that if you can comment or Like that activity, then it is a wall post and not a private message. In the past, users weren't able to comment and Like posts, so Facebook believes members new to Timeline are confusing old posts for private messages.

Here on the Tech team, we checked our own Facebook accounts to make sure. Indeed, older posts were showing up on our Timelines. But they were not the private emails, or direct messages, that are sent between Facebook users and are not visible to anyone else.

A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline. Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users' profile pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy.

To access it on desktop, open Messenger by going to Messenger.com. Click your profile picture at the top-left of the screen and choose Message Requests. This will change your active view to show requests instead of normal messages.

If this was your first time digging into your message requests box, you might be surprised how much is there. If you find that too many many messages are being filtered, or messages that should be caught in the filter are going to your primary inbox, you can adjust how Messenger deals with these.

Another perk about the app is the fact that they store very little information about you. From a functionality standpoint, you can still share videos, voice memos, GIFs and more, all while knowing your messages are fully encrypted and impossible to intercept.

But in mid-June, police also sent a warrant to Facebook requesting the Burgess' private messages. Authorities say those conversations showed the pregnancy had been aborted, not miscarried as the two had said.

"Every day, across the country, police get access to private messages between people on Facebook, Instagram, any social media or messaging service you can think of," says Andrew Crocker, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Warrants for online messages are a routine part of police investigations, he says, but "a lot of people are waking up to it because of the far-ranging nature of how we expect abortion investigations are going to go. And it's going to touch many more people's lives in a way that maybe that they hadn't thought about in the past."

When you send messages and attachments, including photos, videos, or audios in Chat, your content is stored securely in our world-class data centers. Data is encrypted in-transit and at-rest. If you choose to access these files offline, we may store this info on your device.

Google respects your privacy. We access your private content only when we have your permission or are required to by law. With the Google Transparency Report, we share data about how the policies and actions of governments and corporations affect privacy, security, and access to information.

I think they should be called conversations or personal or direct messages rather than private, because saying they are private leaves a user with an expectation of privacy where measures are put in place so the messages are indeed private.

They have special clearance to investigate user accounts suspected to belong to users having links to terrorist groups and, according to The Guardian, this clearance means that they are authorized to rifle through flagged profiles (including private messages) to see who these individuals are talking to and about what, and to check where they have been traveling.

There are many ways to identify that. First, open their profile via tags or comments and see if the profile shows post count without the posts. Secondly, in case their previous messages disappeared from your inbox, but their profile still appears in group messages, then that could also indicate you have been blocked. Lastly, the easiest way to know is to check from a different profile (either your own or your friends). 2ff7e9595c
